40% cost reduction by eliminating ODI licenses. 30% of support resource costs saved. 20% higher customer satisfaction. Faster turnaround time for customer concerns.

About the client

The client is a regulated utility responsible for electricity distribution in parts of Ontario, Canada. It serves residential and commercial customers in the City of Ottawa and the Village of Casselman. The company ensures reliable power delivery while adhering to strict regulatory standards. It plays a key role in supporting local energy infrastructure and sustainability efforts.

Client challenges

The client was operating in a highly complex integration environment, using both Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) and Boomi as part of their enterprise architecture. While Boomi served as their primary iPaaS platform, legacy dependencies on ODI created operational inefficiencies and growing technical debt.

The client faced increasing challenges in maintaining and scaling their integrations:

  • Lack of robust monitoring and error handling: ODI’s limited error-handling mechanisms meant that failures often went unnoticed until they affected downstream systems. Manual intervention became the norm, increasing the risk of delays and data loss.
  • Architecture, design, and scalability challenges: The existing ODI implementation lacked robust architecture and design standards. Additionally, scalability in adding new integrations and handling higher loads was another critical challenge.
  • Data quality issues: Inconsistencies in data transformation and handling within ODI affected both reporting accuracy and the performance of downstream applications.
  • Platform complexity and duplication: Managing integrations across two platforms increased operational overhead. The client struggled with disconnected development processes and toolsets.
  • Collaboration gaps: Coordinating between the ODI and Boomi teams was resource-intensive, especially when validating business logic during migration planning.

Solution

Our experts brought clarity to a fragmented integration landscape. We implemented a modern API led integration architecture based on an industry-standard iPaaS platform. This approach delivered centralized management of integrations and ensured connectivity across systems.

The new design provided scalability to handle growing data volumes, enhanced data security and compliance, and enabled real-time data synchronization, thereby improving business agility.

Additionally, features such as a low-code automation platform and prebuilt connectors helped achieve streamlined processes and faster implementation.

We recommended Boomi as the client’s primary integration platform and delivered multiple new API services with layered security. One of the key improvements was reengineering a direct ODI integration into an enhanced Boomi version. The service was swiftly validated in UAT, fast-tracking the client’s transition to a scalable, future-ready integration model.

A Smart, Modular Migration Strategy

The technical foundation enabled a phased, module-wise migration to Boomi. Our ODI and Boomi teams worked collaboratively to resolve legacy issues and ensure continuity of operations.

  1. Assessment and planning: We identified active ODI packages and aligned with stakeholders on migration orders and priorities.
  2. Technical documentation: Every ODI integration was thoroughly documented, detailing its purpose, data transformation process, data flow, and execution schedule.
  3. Boomi replication: Our teams built visual, low-code Boomi processes that not only replicated ODI functionality but also improved it, adding robust error handling, data validation, and real-time alerts.
  4. Rigorous testing: We ran ODI and Boomi in parallel to ensure identical outputs. Once validated by the client through UAT, the processes were ready to go live.
  5. Deployment and optimization: Each process was transitioned to Boomi with careful monitoring, while legacy ODI packages were phased out over time.

Benefits

  • Cost optimization: Eliminated dual-platform overhead with a 40% reduction in costs by retiring ODI licenses and maintenance fees.
  • Enhanced performance: Optimized integration architecture to enable faster data processing and improved platform efficiency.
  • Improved customer experience: Delivered uninterrupted business services, leading to a 20% increase in customer satisfaction scores.
  • Operational efficiency: Achieved a 30% reduction in support resource costs while accelerating turnaround time for resolving customer concerns.
  • Improved reliability: Advanced error-handling mechanisms minimized failures and eliminated false alerts, reducing manual oversight.
